Jane's Walk 2024 - Walk 6 - How to read a house - Sunday 5th May 2024 @ 2pm

We walk past them every day, but how often do we take the chance to actually look at them? A house can tell us a lot about when and how it was built, how it has changed and who might have lived there, if you just know how to read it. We’ll look at some free resources that can be used to support further research and help confirm findings. We will also discuss the historical background to some of the areas we visit.

Meet: 2pm. Firstsite (foyer), CO1 1JH (2m, 2hrs)

ACCESSIBILITY: A city centre walk that is hard-surfaced all the way and step-free. Mostly low gradient, though some medium-steep eg within Dutch Quarter. Wheelchair users in need of assistance will find plenty of help on hand, but please be in touch to discuss further if necessary.

Street scene of a crowed of people listenign to a talk in a street full of old houses.

If you’d like a tour of the UK's oldest and newest city, you have chosen the right guide! My name is Andrew Mowbray and I am a fully qualified Colchester Tour Guide who loves sharing the history of our city with everyone who visits. Every location I go to has a story to tell and I love being the storyteller.

I offer walking tours of Colchester, either at prearranged times, or at a time to suit you.

If you would like a tour of Colchester, but can’t get here, you wish to do a preview before you visit or you just don’t want to go out in the cold, I can take you on a virtual tour from the comfort of your own home or wherever you happen to be.

As well as tours I offer talks on local history and also astronomy which can be held at your meeting venue or online.
