A milestone for Colchester Castle

The museum in Colchester Castle originally opened in 1860. It was in the front part of the Castle as that was the only bit that had a roof. The rest of the Castle was effectively a courtyard open to the sky. The Castle shut in December 1934 for a major refurbishment which including shoring up the Castle vaults and fitting a roof onto the whole building. On the 12th July 1935 it was reopened with the museum occupying the whole building which it still does today. I am one of the guides in the Castle and I was able to do two tours of the vaults and roof today which is of course the 90th anniversary of that reopening.
