The Avignon Garden in Castle Park

The Avignon Garden in Castle Park

The Avignon Garden in Castle Park looked amazing in the sunshine this Spring. Its start in life was a lot less glamorous though. It was originally part of the Castle ditch in front of the ramparts. In the 18th century, local MP Charles Gray owned the Castle and the ditch was part of his garden. He decided to landscape it and make it into a Venetian style garden with a long water feature. Unfortunately the soil here is pure sand so any water just drained away so we are left with the sunken garden you see today. It is named after one of the places the city is twinned with.
